One of the issues that IPS,LLC encounters frequently involves the excessive use of medications commonly prescribed for anxiety or to help with sleeping issues. When the excessive use is combined with abuse of other drugs or alcohol the combination can be deadly. Some of the benzodiazepines most commonly abused are Xanax, Klonopin, Ativan, Restoril, and Valium. Withdrawal from these drugs can be very dangerous. At the present time there is no approved procedure for a rapid withdrawal. The sudden withdrawal can result in serious consequences including increased heart and respiration rates, increases in blood pressure and body temperature, tremors, vomitng, and the possiblity of seizures. In severe withdrawal patients can experience visual or auditory hallucinations.
Currently the only procedure we use to help patients quit the use of benzodiazepines is a very slow wean down process. When done in a controlled manner the procedure is very successful but needs to be done at the direction of a physician. The process can take several months depending on the patient's level of medication use and their willingness to follow physician's orders.
